Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Films are powerful tools for shaping societal norms and values, including those related to family life. By portraying various family dynamics, roles, and challenges, films can influence viewers’ perceptions and behaviors toward family relationships (Aminu & Hassan, 2023). In Jere North Local Government Area, Borno State, where traditional family values are deeply embedded, films are increasingly consumed for entertainment and educational purposes. This study examines the extent to which films impact family values in the area, exploring their role in reinforcing or challenging existing norms.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Family values, which encompass principles like respect, responsibility, and unity, are crucial for societal stability. However, the increasing influence of modern media, including films, has introduced new perspectives that sometimes conflict with traditional values (Okeke & Bello, 2024). In Jere North, where films are popular among diverse age groups, concerns have emerged about their impact on family values. This study investigates how films shape family values in the community, addressing a gap in localized research on this topic.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the portrayal of family values in films consumed in Jere North Local Government Area.
  2. To examine the influence of films on residents’ attitudes and behaviors toward family relationships.
  3. To explore residents’ perceptions of the role of films in promoting or undermining family values.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How are family values portrayed in films consumed in Jere North?
  2. What influence do films have on residents’ attitudes and behaviors toward family relationships?
  3. How do residents perceive the impact of films on family values?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films portray both traditional and modern family values, influencing viewers’ perceptions.
  2. Exposure to films significantly impacts attitudes and behaviors toward family relationships in Jere North.
  3. Residents have mixed perceptions of films’ roles in shaping family values.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study provides valuable insights for educators, filmmakers, and policymakers seeking to use films as tools for promoting positive family values. Its findings highlight the dual role of films as both educational resources and potential sources of cultural shift.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of films on family values in Jere North Local Government Area, Borno State. It examines specific films and their influence on community norms and behaviors.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
